Avenue Banner Dedication
Friday, November 6, 2009

On March 7, 2008 a group of engaging Southwest Louisvillians gathered in the conference room at Montgomery Honda in PRP to discuss forming the SWDT. I remember it well; the weatherman called for 10” of snow that day, on top of ½” of ice already on the ground. The dreams and ideas being shared were invigorating and thought provoking. Nobody wanted to leave that meeting!

The architects of the SWDT came together that day in a spirit of cooperation, determined to go forth as responsible community leaders to make and prepare for a vibrant Southwest Louisville. These men and women set out on a path to achieve 8 individual goals, number one of the eight and arguably the most important; to change the negative perceptions others may have of the Southwest Louisville community. And, to strengthen and enhance the perceptions we have of ourselves!

On March 20th of this year a huge 90’x15’ banner baring the message, Welcome to Southwest Louisville was placed near the Watterson exit ramp to southbound Dixie Hwy traffic. Our message of welcome along with six images reflecting our quality of life has truly broken barriers of mistaken identity.

Today, we continue our pursuit of delivering the best in Southwest hospitality. Our message of welcome will now extend beyond the Shively banner well into the heart of Southwest Louisville.

Our new banners will first and foremost deliver a message of Pride! We truly love our part of town. We choose to live here, we choose to do business here and we choose to play here! With a loud voice over 150,000 people who call Southwest Louisville home, say with pride, welcome!

Our new banners will also carry a message of Excellence! For we truly are a people of excellence! We strive for excellence in our neighborhoods. We strive for excellence in our schools and most certainly in our places of business.

Just ask Ed Gould of Gould’s Discount Medical why he chose Southwest Louisville as an excellent place to expand his family business. Just ask Chris Theinaman about Ernesto’s. Just ask Robert Gauthier about his Rooster’s Restaurant expansion. Just ask any manager of Bob Evans or Shane Tingle at Louisville Paint and Supply. Chances are these business owners and managers recognized an excellent opportunity when they saw it!

Finally, our banners reflect the belief which all Southwest Louisvillians share. And that is; Unity, the common thread that weaves together the fabric of our community. We are united, in that this community deserves a national brand Dept Store for our residents to shop for clothing and other home essentials. We are united that our community deserves other national brand restaurants such as Cracker Barrel, Olive Garden and Panera Bread.

We are also united in proclaiming our loyalty to all potential merchants who locate in the area. Qdoba has heard our call… and will soon open for business. Others too will hear our call. Just wait and see…

On this the 6th day of November, 2009 we proudly dedicate our new “Avenue Banners”, that they will speak our message of welcome, and, of our wonderful quality of life to all those who pass by.

Thank you very much!

It’s a great day in Southwest Louisville! Have a great weekend.
Robert Price, President SWDT
