Mill Creek Greenway Project

The Southwest Dream Team strongly advocates for funding The Mill Creek Greenways Project, which represents a unique opportunity to turn an urban waterway into functional recreational space. Two long-term projects – the Louisville MSD Watershed Plan for Mill Creek and The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources Stream Restoration of Mill Creek – with the focus on determining how to fix erosion issues, restore wildlife habitat, and stop the stream’s stagnation have been completed and will be funded. If funded, the Mill Creek Greenway Project would represent the icing on the cake by taking approximately 8 miles of neglected waterway located between Sylvania Park in PRP and the Mill Creek power plant south of Valley Station and turning it into a winding recreation corridor. Metro Louisville already owns about 1,000 acres of land along Mill Creek which were purchased for flood mitigation and preservation about 30 years ago. The Mill Creek Greenway Project would give Southwest Jefferson County its own version of The Parklands if funding can be secured.
The Mill Creek Greenway Project has the potential to be one of the nation’s largest and most comprehensive urban stream mitigation efforts while providing functional recreational space and activity hubs that connect to other greenspaces. It would draw visitors from areas outside of Louisville such as Fort Knox and other parts of Louisville to Southwest Jefferson County creating economic development opportunities. It would give our neighbors and friends things to do near their homes. As such, we strongly support the Mill Creek Greenways Project.
